Apple iChat
In MacOS X 10.5 "Leopard", iChat will look in one of the "Compositions" directories (/Library, /System/Library, or ~/Library) for compositions matching the "Image Processing" protocol. If found, those compositions will be available as an effect in iChat.
Apple iTunes
In MacOS X 10.5 "Leopard", iTunes can use a composition from the Compsition directory that adheres to the "Music Visualization" protocol as a visualizer. Just create your composition using the template, drop it in /Library/Compositions, and re-start iTunes. It will appear in the Visualizer sub-menu.

Quicktime 7 has native support for quartz compositions on Tiger / OSX. Panther does not, nor does the windows version of Quicktime 7.
Apple Keynote

In MacOS X 10.5, one can put a composition conforming to the "Graphic Animation" protocol in the Compositions folder and it will be available as a background in Keynote.
Apple iMovie
You can incorporate a Quartz Composition into iMovie by using the import feature. The default settings treat .qtz files as 30 seconds in length. You can set the resolution (screen size) and duration in Quartz Composer by using the Edit|Export as Mov command. Or you can set these parameters from the command line, using the 'defaults' command. However, there is currently no way to apply Quartz Composer effects to video from within iMovie.
In the iMovie HD '06 version of the application, Quartz Compositions can be used as effects. You have to name the file Effect_MyName.qtz, use particular names for the exported inputs, and put the file in the Contents/Resources directory of the iMovie app itself. But once you do, you can apply the composition to any length movie in real time and look at previews.
In iMovie '08 running in Leopard, a composition obeying the Transitions protocol can be put in one of the Compositions directories.
